All I can say after watching the battle episode is...go Team Lagertha!
I agree that Ivar really didn't do anything useful. He likes to think of himself as someone who others should fear...but if his army had any sense, they'd see that he just manipulates everyone to sacrifice themselves for him and then sits back and does nothing. Meanwhile, Lagertha, Björn, Ubbe and her army were all in the thick of it, fighting/kicking major butt. I wondered why, at the start of the episode, Ivar had reverted to slithering his way around the place when he'd been using his handy leg braces so much lately.
Margrethe is such a pointless – and exceedingly annoying – character. Whenever they cut to her, just her expression annoys the heck out of me, and then we got her pointless singing to the child scene. What a waste of screentime.
All the stuff going on in Flokiland doesn’t really interest me at this stage. And Floki himself was kind of lousy, just sitting there as everyone else did the hard work. I can understand those who are against him. I see hetried to replicate Lagertha’s bird-on-the-shoulder look...but it just wasn’t working for him like it did for her.
Getting back to the battle...every time Lagertha got close to Ivar or turned her back to him, I got worried he was going to kill (or at least harm) her. I fully expected some sudden out-of-nowhere stabbing or whatever. This made for very tension-filled scenes for me when watching.
The battle itself featured quite a few quite nasty moments – a shield maiden being bludgeoned to death on the back with a shield (a case of irony there?), gouged out eyes, some dude’s arm dangling and someone getting a hammer to the forehead were the ones that stuck out to me the most.
I was worried for Lagertha again when she got close to Bishop Heahmund and I thought he was going to stab her or something when she rolled him over. I’m glad that didn’t happen...but I still think her letting him live might cost her (maybe his being a Christian reminds her of Athelstan...but he’s nothing like Athelstan, Lagertha, don’t make that mistake!). When she wondered why he was saved, all I could think was, “His plot armour’s too strong – that’s why!”.
I think I’m going to be fretting about Lagertha’s safety until the season’s over. I just hope that what she said to Ivar in this episode doesn't come back to bite her.
