I don't think it is a minor success, either. It's a write off. It'll might make it's money back with the Whedon cut... maybe. They're going to cut their losses there. With all the reshoots they did, that can add up. Solo will be in the same boat since they reshot almost the entire movie and brought in a new actor to replace one that couldn't return for the reshoots. I understand your point but believe me the studio isn't losing money. Merchandising, promotions, home video, streaming and TV rights will more than turn a profit. The question is whether or not this is a box office success. The rule of thumb for box office success has nothing to do with profit. It is twice the production budget. If a movie makes that at the world wide box office than it is called a box office success and is deemed worthy of sequels. But will those things turn a profit. Maybe they'll get money from the viewing rights, but I don't think people will be running out to buy the merchandising for a movie that wasn't all that good. I'm betting that they won't get all that much from the viewing rights either. WB would be the ones that need the money to recuperate. Streamers don't need to have the movie.
