Dravid batted at no.3 for most of his career (coming in ahead of Tendulkar). Lara was initially a no.3 who batted at 4/5 in the 2nd half of his career. In any case, I don't think the batting position makes too much of a difference in terms of having an opportunity to make a match-winning contribution in Tests. In ODIs though, it is essential to have the best batsmen in the top 3 to give them maximum overs as well as the chance to cash in during the fielding restrictions in the first 10 overs.
