Didn't he drink some of the water from the Holy Grail, which was supposed to give him ever lasting life?
While it is true that his father died in a "regular human life span"... it is possible that the grail just healed him of his wounds, and didn't extend his life...
The Grail's effects only worked within the temple and once you crossed the seal, it wore off.
