Same English friend (the Welch's grape one ) had a laughing fit when I pronounced Tintagel Castle as Tint-a-gel.
Seems it's supposed to be Tin-ta-jell. I had only seen it in print and had never heard the word spoken.
BUT he was "gotten back" when he was asked to pronounce the New York town of Mamaroneck.
He said, as if easy as pie, Mama-ro-neck. It's actually Ma-mare-o-neck.
I know some USA folks who say shed-yule. UGH
