In terms of overall screen presence... both are solid as it's close either way. but if I base it on movies that stand out between the two it favors... Denzel, which makes me lean towards Denzel if I have to choose.
also, both have appeared in a 10/10 level movie for me(there are only nine movies I gave a 10/10 in general), which are... Training Day (2001) and Open Range (2003).
but if I based it on volume of movies each actor has amongst My Favorite Movies in general... Denzel has 5 and Costner only 2 as you can see below...
Denzel...
1.Training Day (2001) - 10/10 (THE movie many will remember Denzel for, including myself.) 2.The Book of Eli (2010) - 7.5-8/10 3.Flight (2012) - 7-7.5/10 4.Deja Vu (2006) - 7/10 5.American Gangster (2007) - 6.5-7/10
Costner...
1.Open Range (2003) - 10/10 (within my Top 4 Westerns ever as this is basically a four way tie for my #1 Western(basically four of the nine movies I gave a 10/10 are Westerns)) 2.Mr Brooks (2007) - 8/10 (this used to be a 9/10 for me until my most recent re-watch on May 9th 2017)
but I will say between the two actors that Costner holds the #1 spot for most interesting character which is Mr Earl Brooks from Mr Brooks (2007) even though Denzel is great in Training Day.
p.s. speaking of Training Day... the director of this is basically a one-hit-wonder for me.
