Same thing happened with "The Birdcage" and I was really sad because it is one of my favorite movies...
But the entire premise hinges on you siding with the kids, even just a little. Watching it recently, they just come off as pretentious, self important cowards who torture one family just to barely appease another.
Thats true but you cant apply social expectations and behaviour in different eras to the present imo. A lot of rap music was extremely homophobic in the 90s and would obviously be unacceptable by today's standards but dismissing the quality of it by that alone is unfair.
