The ABA lured NBA talent and was pretty strong pretty quickly, but they did have the 3 when the NBA didn't. 1st year after 4 ABA teams merged into the NBA, Denver was 50-32, San Antonio 44-38, and both made the playoffs. Indiana wasn't bad, and the Nets sucked.

When the AFL and NFL teams merged, the old AFL was 19-40-2 the first couple of years.
