Darkest Hour is one of those which I have already seen, and I was not at all impressed with his fussy caricature. Not that it was necessarily his fault - I doubt any actor could have added much shading to such a badly written portrayal of Churchill. Well, I have to apologize for recommending it. I have a screener for it and so far have only looked at the first few minutes, and I got a different feel from the one you present, so I felt safe in recommending it. I'll get back to you after I watch the whole thing - which now you've made me a bit disinclined to do, and yet I must. Yesterday I watched Get Out, which I thought was brilliantly directed and performed, but by the end I thought it had fallen into such silliness that I could barely stand it. I felt like I had wasted two hours of my life. I may well feel the same about Darkest Hour. Anyway, thanks for your interesting and informative comments. And although I've never seen it, I understand that John Lithgow is wonderful as Churchhill in the tv series, The Crown. Since I haven't seen it, I'm only reporting what I've heard. So take that for what it's worth. Oh, do watch it - particularly if you have a screener, nothing to lose! Many people are responding well to it. I am a sucker for this type of film but this was SO heavy-handed and poorly conceived, spelling out plot points in ridiculously contrived fashion. I can only tolerate dumbing down to a certain level and this went beyond. But many people are responding very positively to it, so you could very well have a different response. Lithgow was simply wonderful in The Crown, a nuanced and moving portrayal of Churchill. I also enjoyed Albert Finney in The Gathering Storm some years back. The worst I have seen is Timothy Spall in The King's Speech, the worst kind of waxworks caricature next to whom Oldman is a model of subtlety! I thought Get Out started extremely well but fell apart with certain plot turns towards the end. Still enjoyable, and Daniel Kaluuya's excellent, charismatic performance carried it through. Horror movies are not my kind of thing at all and I only watched this because of the acclaim and awards buzz, but I largely enjoyed it. Not something I would have ever considered Best Picture worthy - but if given a choice between this and Darkest Hour...
