For someone who was raised in NC and SC, I can most definitely tell you that Monkey is used for a racial slur. Some just use it to replace saying the n-word, like thug recently. Thug is being used more and more by people around me as a replacement slur. (especially on the golf course) One variant of monkey, is Porch Monkey you hear that one a lot around here. Just like thug though monkey does have non racist definitions, it doesn't mean they aren't used as racial slurs.
