Well, Conduit had a big storyline and was in the comics for a little while in the mid 90s. He was basically the prototype for Batman's Hush character. He's not a complete nobody, and he had the interesting dynamic in that he hated Clark first and didn't care about Superman until he found out they were the same guy. And Zod was actually a lesser known character before Superman II, so there's precedent for making a lesser character bigger. Never read anything with him, but he sounds really interesting. He was kind of a re-conceptualization of the Kryptonite Man villain. He was a human born in Smallville the same day Superman's ship landed.
