It's disappointing how these Alien prequels shape the creature's creation as a man-made mutant. For me what made the alien so frightening to begin with is that it just is. It's simply just a frightening creature that naturally evolved somewhere in the galaxy and exists just to expand its species. Likewise, what makes that Space Jockey scene so eerie in the original is that it's an ancient ship that's been fossilized for thousands of years and having our human heroes come across this giant dead alien adds to the horror. Knowing that they're actually big human bodybuilders with suits on just makes them less interesting.
Another frustrating part of these films is wasting Michael Fassbinder. I think he does a good job as both David and Walter, but he deserved better films around him. And at the end of the day, David's an anti-hero with a hate for humans, and when he's more interesting than the actual main human heroes that becomes a problem.
Covenant is better than Prometheus in that it at least has a proper story and a couple of cool moments (The massacre of the Engineers is brutal and Fassbinder's dual performance), but overall very disappointing considering it have done more.
