Artificially boosted by a major actor dying, which the film exploited, and also TDK came out in a time when CBMs weren't as mainstream as they are now so it was able to gain a foothold before proper competition came out.
not comparable. TDK was Plus Nolan inspires deranged fans, but thankfully BvS kicked their feet out from under them.

I feel bad for WB/DC though. They have yet to make another quality film like TDK.
