It shut up the Nolanites who thought DC could do no wrong, for one thing. Another TDK will never happen, now that people know they have a valid alternative to DC. They didn't have that back in 2008. They already had a trilogy of X-Men films, two of which were well received, a trilogy of Spider-Man movies, two of which were really well received, a slew of random movies like Punisher and the two Hulks, and even Iron Man. The first X-Trilogy ended in 2006 on a less-than-stellar note, the Spidey movies ended in 2007 similarly on a not-so-great note. Nothing in 2008. Put out the Dark Knight now, opposite something like Civil War or Infinity War, and it wouldn't be as well regarded. Especially if no one dies.
