so you got a clear cut #1 with Code Red and then for your alternate it's tied with Coke/Pepsi. thanks for the info.
I wonder how well Code Red is doing in terms of sales. but it must be doing okay enough considering it's still on the market 17 years later. but I wonder if we put aside Mtn Dew/Diet Mountain Dew whether Code Red is Mountain Dew's next best seller of the Mountain Dew branded drinks or not but I can't seem to find much online taking a quick look.
another thing... I like 'Throwback' version of Mountain Dew (i.e. same formula but uses real sugar instead of High Fructose Corn Syrup (basically the way it originally was as they switched to the HFCS stuff in roughly the early 1980's because it's cheaper than using real sugar)) but I generally cannot find it in 2-liters as it tastes similar but different as the aftertaste is where it's most noticeable which is assume is purely because it's actual sugar. I always heard real sugar tastes different but I was surprised it was more noticeable than I thought it would be. but Ill say I have had the Coke version with the real sugar (imported from Mexico in those glass bottles) and that I don't notice much difference but with Mtn Dew it's definitely noticeable. on a side note... I noticed they actually use a little less grams of sugar in the Throwback version to.
here is something I found on Wikipedia...
so I won't be able to remember Mountain Dew and other soft drinks taste prior to HFCS because I was born in 1979. well that is until they released Mountain Dew Throwback in 2009 which is basically like how Mountain Dew used to be prior to the early 1980's or so. I can still find the Throwback at places like Wal-Mart but it seems to be only available in a 12 pack of 12oz cans mainly. I occasionally see it in a 20oz bottle but I did not see the 2-liter bottles there for long even though when it's available I generally go with it. but one person I know who is also a big fan of Mountain Dew like I am (he's been drinking it a long time and is in his early 40's(I am late 30's)), does not like the sugar version of it. but I notice it's largely the aftertaste where you can really notice the taste difference. but it's weird because with Coke I can't say I notice any obvious differences between the HFCS and real sugar version.
EDIT:
I noticed that on Wikipedia a moment ago.
so assuming that's true that still pretty much means I won't remember the real sugar version as I doubt I was drinking general pop (or soda as some call it) til pretty much the early 1990's. If i had in the 1980's I can't say I clearly remember it and even if I did, when your a kid your not likely to notice these things as by the time I would clearly remember this stuff would have been basically more into the teens on up. so basically as long as I can clearly remember Mountain Dew (basically into the 1990's a bit, say 1993-ish+) was already on HFCS.
looks like they got a lot of different variations of the Mount Dew brand... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_Dew#Flavors_and_varieties ; I barely tried any of them though because I just KNOW they won't hold a candle to the original for me. if I could even find something in the ball park of the original I would be surprised especially given I have been drinking Mountain Dew for I would say a easy 20+ years but probably more in the 25+ year range (ill be 39 later this year) which is the easy majority of my life.
I switched to regular Mountain Dew for a while back in the late 90s. Then when Code Red came out in 2001 I tried it and haven't looked back. After drinking that for so long regular Mountain Dew just doesn't even sound good. Code Red is my go to and then I alternate between Coke and Pepsi when I want to change it up.

Soft drink makers such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi continue to use sugar in other nations but transitioned to HFCS for U.S. markets in 1980 before completely switching over in 1984.

Flavor changed [Mtn Dew] to use high fructose corn syrup in the 1990s.
