I liked the Nielsen version, however, I did prefer Conan The Destroyer over it. Same director a year later.
Have you read any of the comic book series by Gail Simone, Amy Chu, Marguerite Bennett, Ron Marz and Brian Reed under Dynamite Entertainment? The comic books are very different than the movie and the movie had far more in common with Red Sonya of Rogatino from 'The Shadow of the Vulture' by Robert E. Howard than Red Sonja (who was loosely based on that character but is more like Howard's Dark Agnes de Chastillon) and the director said it was written as a parody. The 'Red Sonja' are very dark, bloody and violent and Red Sonja cuts people's heads off and fights monsters that are the size of buildings with her sword. The character was given a complete makeover when Dynamite Entertainment took over the series and the Red Sonja of today is actually not the same character who originally appeared in Marvel comic books. Gail Simone removed a lot of the sexist elements associated with the character before including the "she will not sleep with a man until he has beaten her in battle" part and made her bisexual. The new movie is going to be completely different especially with 'Red Sonja LLC' now owning full control of the character and having big say over everything that gets made.
