I suspect that many people are aware there was likely some "creator" or intelligent force involved in the successful establishment of life on Earth who nevertheless say they do not think there was. It's not so much that they're "lying" as it's that they really do not want to believe in a creator.

The better question then might be, why don't they want to believe in a creator? That's the 900 pound gorilla in the room.
