Lois didn't need to be on the plane as she could have easily explained to Dr. Hamilton what to do, who is a scientist after all. And what if Hamilton had a question that he needed to ask and Lois wasn't there? Well, they could try calling Lois with the plane's radio, but what if the radio was damaged during the battle? Would you risk the fate of the entire planet on Hamilton understanding exactly what needed to be done or on the radio working properly? Safer to have the only person who actually talked to Jor-El on the plane. it was him who even figured out what to do with the pod And it was Lois who that the key had to go all the way into the slot. If Lois wasn't there, Hamilton might've thought that the key being partially in the slot was enough. Hamilton might've had to call Lois to make sure. And like I said above, if the radio doesn't work, then the entire planet is fucked. Safer to have the only person who actually talked to Jor-El on the plane instead of risking the fate of the entire planet on Hamilton understanding exactly what needed to be done or on the radio working properly. Jor-El explained everything to Lois. There's no reason why she couldn't do the same verbatim to Hamilton, including the key going in all the way. Again, plot contrivance for Superman to save Lois again
