I had a blast watching the TV series for the first time around a decade ago. Darren McGavin was great as Kolchak bringing to the character high-energy. He was a complete pest (especially to police captains), yet charming in his mannerisms. While his firecracker combination with Simon Oakland (as the newspaper editor) never disappointed. I do agree the quality of the episodes can vary, but its brazen ideas and chemistry of the cast kept me invested even through the lesser outings.
My personal faves would be "The Zombie", "The Spanish Moss Murders", "Horror in the Heights", "Bad Medicine" & "The Trevi Collection". There were only two I didn't care for; "They have been, they are, they will be" and "The Youth Killer".
As for the two tv films that kickstarted it all. They're excellent additions. I think they're both are about equal, although I find the second TV feature "Night Strangler" probably a little more creative. I enjoyed how the first started off in Las Vegas, which fitted right in with the vampire story and then in the follow up Kolchak finds himself tucked away in Seattle.
