Contesting a hand to hand combat duel where the loser may be legally murdered to decide the throne which requires attributes greater than just simply skilled combat is pretty primitive. The fact they also heavily believe in panther gods, ancestral rituals and are separated into "tribes" (basically real life Africans) also show even though they may possess advanced technology, they are not yet scientifically cultured as in a secular democratic society.
