I guess for the time when it was made, it was an original premise—as were most films from this era—and what it depicted was more horrendous than perhaps incredible in the context of what was happening to the titular title character. However, it was also a hype, because it was a low budget B grader, and they also still didn't shy away from the fact in the advertising that it was a horror film.
