Guitar sales are down but pedal sales have been up for a while now. Seems most new guitarists are more interested in using their guitar like an effects board than playing traditional blues, rock, country and metal. It could also be that more and more are buying used. Gibson and Fender's pricing has skyrocketed in recent years. When I bought my first Les Paul Custom 16 years ago they listed for about $2600 new, and now they list for over $4300, and I don't know why anyone would pay that when you could get a superior hand-made replica for half from any number of luthiers.
