I think the director did a good job with a script that wasn't exactly original.
The way they set up the fateful trip was smart, and reminded me of The Descent, when the main character's husband died and that was hanging over the group, causing tension as they tried to find a way out of the caves. In The Ritual it was a similar kind of tension, but probably more relevant: If your buddy is a coward, how do you feel being in a life-or-death situation with him?
The shots of the woods were great. There was one shot in particular that looked like it was rusted metal, and as the camera pulled out you realize it's a group of trees with white bark half peeled-off.
I really liked the way the monster got to the four guys in the cabin. It was all psychological, and it was very effective to see four adult men freaked out. One of them has pissed himself, another is in the corner crying and calling for his wife, and one of them is upstairs stark naked, praying to the freaky effigy. And of course, the main character got some sort of claw mark on his chest.
Lastly, the creature design was pretty damn good. At first it looks like there are inconsistencies, and then you realize it's this grotesquerie with a razor back, equine hooves and the head, chest and arms of a human-like thing coming out the front.
