I had always loved MAD Magazine when Bill Gaines was the editor-in-chief. Its movie spoofs were hilarious.
I remember the cartoon lampooning DANCES WITH WOLVES; in one frame, there was a close-up of an Oscar statuette with a tag attached saying "Congratulations, Jeremy Irons". This was a back-handed slap to Best Actor nominee Kevin Costner, who had lost to Irons.
Some of these spoofs were milder--for example, "What's Entertainment?", which supposedly was a mockery of THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT. This cartoon really lambasted Louis B. Mayer, the head of MGM, where those great musicals were made. It also displayed Gaines' love for classic Hollywood movies--a love I share. Another example is "Mentl", a spoof of Barbra Streisand's YENTL. Many of the writers and illustrators of MAD were Jewish, and their backgrounds were similar to the environment of YENTL.
I stopped buying MAD Magazine when Gaines retired (he passed away many years ago). I feel that the periodical has moved from humor to vulgarity.
