Based on a short story by Aleksander Pushkin, The Queen of Spades is an expectionally made gothic horror with a stunning cinematography and a riveting performance by Anton Walbrook. One of my personal favourites from the 1940s ! Is anyone acquainted with this rather obscure gem ? Always in my Top 100 list. I would not call it obscure. It is often referred to by critics and historians, partly because Dickinson retired early from film directing and held a number of influential academic posts, so he had a lot of influence on how the history of cinema was viewed.
