As far as I know, THE FABULOUS DORSEYS was the only big-band movie where the subjects played themselves, rather than their parts going to professional stars.
The REASON for this, if 'twer true, MIGHT be that :
MANY OF THE BIG BAND BIOGRAPHIES ARE ABOUT DEAD MUSICIANS AND SO THEY HAVE TO BE PLAYED BY LIVING PEOPLE.
