Huntington's Disease destroys the mind as well as the body. ALS does not affect the mind in any way.
Stephen Hawking had a wonderful mind and a great sense of humor. Any fans of "The Big Bang Theory" would be aware of this.
No family is going to rejoice in the loss of a loved one. Hawking was an atheist, so I am pretty sure that he didn't think of death as giving him a release from the earthly existence that trapped his body. Dead is gone, and his family is going to miss him.
Almost everyone suffering from a disease that takes away their mobility, sight, hearing, speech, etc. is hoping for a medical breakthrough that will make them normal again. I lost my ability to walk 2.5 years ago. No one knows why and the doctors, inhibited by my insurance company aren't helping. Every working of symptoms is a new challenge to be faced and conquered. Four weeks ago, I lost the use of my right thumb. Being right handed, this has been hard to adjust to. I can't even blow my nose properly, and it has been made harder by the fact I cry when I get frustrated.
I live in a nursing home now because I have no family to take care of me. At $7500 a month, staying here costs $2000 a month more than my income. I have gone through almost all of my savings with the hope someday I will get better and can go home to my house, my housemate, my cat, my TV and my film collection.
What I want and what the outcome will be is unknown, but I can tell you that I want to live, but it may not be my decision.
