I very much like The Thing (1982); but don't consider it an actual remake since the 1951 Thing From Another World only covered the first third of the short novel, Who Goes There? So I can enjoy both movies without worrying which is better.
I think as a rule, talkie remakes are better than the silent originals. I'm thinking of movies like Frankenstein and The Ten Commandments, and the previously mentioned Ben Hur.
I think the 1951 Disney Alice in Wonderland cartoon is better than the grotesque 1931 live action original with the likes of Gary Cooper and Cary Grant.
