I expect they have seen the growth in interest, coverage, and attendances in the womens game the last few years, and now want a piece of the action as the game is being restructured. A bit galling that they have the financial clout to buy themselves straight in to the 2nd tier though. They should be made to play their way through the leagues. Yeah a bit unfair, especially as they are such latecomers, but I suppose the bigger picture is it will help bring more interest to the women's game. Phil Neville says Man United are working to be pioneers. But I think that boat might have already sailed. Not sure what they are going to pioneer? The womens game is already taking off without them. Lewes FC (and others) already pay their mens and womens teams equally. Teams like Chelsea now launch their mens and womens kits in the same photo-shoots side by side. Arsenal and Man City shops now stock named womens team shirts alongside the mens shirt in their club shops. I don't think there is much they can claim to be pioneering.
