Question is, is UConn another UNLV? A program that had one run with one coach. They won a title under Kevin Ollie, but it was still Jim Calhoun's team. Like UNLV under Tarkanian, a national power, then one good year after Tark swam away. Connecticut isn't the premier job it once was. Team isn't in the Big East anymore. Stoors, Connecticut isn't exactly a happening place. Everyone thought UConn was a better job than Pitt, exclusive of money. Sucks for Rhode Island, sucks for the A-10. My thoughts exactly. The only real draw was Calhoun. Now if they want to recruit, they can point to championships won by Calhoun's teams and...the women's team? I mean what's the draw? Storrs is in the absolute middle of nowhere, and I thought Amherst, MA was a basketball backwater. UConn is in a more happening locale than Penn State. Stoors is a short ways away from Hartford. Penn State is a million miles away from anywhere. I'm not saying Hurley jumped onto a sinking ship. Like you said, those four banners hanging from the rafters is a powerful recruiting tool. And schools can regain their glory. Duke was second rate between the '78 title game and Krzyzewski 1986 team. If UConn was in the ACC or Big East, maybe. The AAC is a good conference. Cincinnati, Wichita State, Houston is rising, Memphis might turn around under Penny Hardaway. But you still have Tulsa, East Carolina, South Florida. Pitt has no banners (to speak of), no history, bleaker future. But the have the AAC.
