My thoughts exactly. The only real draw was Calhoun. Now if they want to recruit, they can point to championships won by Calhoun's teams and...the women's team? I mean what's the draw? Storrs is in the absolute middle of nowhere, and I thought Amherst, MA was a basketball backwater. UConn is in a more happening locale than Penn State. Stoors is a short ways away from Hartford. Penn State is a million miles away from anywhere. I'm not saying Hurley jumped onto a sinking ship. Like you said, those four banners hanging from the rafters is a powerful recruiting tool. And schools can regain their glory. Duke was second rate between the '78 title game and Krzyzewski 1986 team. If UConn was in the ACC or Big East, maybe. The AAC is a good conference. Cincinnati, Wichita State, Houston is rising, Memphis might turn around under Penny Hardaway. But you still have Tulsa, East Carolina, South Florida. Pitt has no banners (to speak of), no history, bleaker future. But the have the AAC. Sure, but Hartford? The most interesting thing in Hartford is the Mark Twain House (but then I'm a dork so I'm the wrong guy to ask). But yeah a championship history is a great recruiting tool-- more than UMass has to offer, to go back to my earlier comparison. Storrs is actually a great little town if you're into that kind of thing (I'm a small town guy), but the locale can't be the draw for recruits. It's the tradition and the conference for sure.
