I second John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982) and "They Live" (1988).
I would add "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) and "The Andromeda Strain" (1971). Coincidentally, both had remakes in 2008 and both were supposed to be terrible. IMO, the only good thing about the "The Day the Earth Stood Still" remake was it prompted a two-disc special edition DVD of the original. I can't comment on "The Andromeda Strain" remake because I didn't see it.
