Stephen King once posed a hypothetical situation. He said that Ryan O'Neal should have played Jack Torrance in The Shining (a film he did not like) and Jack Nicholson should have played Barry Lyndon. I totally agree. Nicholson was already known for playing "maniac" characters, which in my opinion, made him less scary in The Shining. But he would have had just the right screen presence to play Barry Lyndon, a roll I think Ryan O'Neal was a little too soft for.
