The Neon Demon (2016)
I was pleasantly surprised by this. Before viewing I thought that it would be pretentious, and I'm not exactly a fan of NWR's earlier productions, but he won me over with this. It's a deliberately thin plot, and mostly a character study with doses of commentary. I was reminded of Mulholland Drive whilst watching this, but this was much more diet Lynch than full on meta. The themes were interesting to me as they weren't things that I would usually think about. The electronic, slightly 80's style soundtrack was fantastic, I've been listening to it repeatedly, and the movie was visually delicious.
Not for everyone, but a rarity in mainstream cinema, that's for sure.
