Who was the better songwriter: John Lennon or Paul McCartney

Depends on what kind of tune you prefer. Paul wrote the goopy pop songs, Lennon wrote the preachy songs with meaning. "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" v. "Come Together". "My Love" v. "Working Class Hero". Me, I prefer Lennon.
