I think the problem was the showrunners had too many Olicity fans praising them up so they believed they were doing the right thing. I think they sacrificed a lot of the things they had originally planned to please 'Olicity' fans and it would be interesting to see what 'Arrow' would be like today if they hadn't listened to them and gone in another direction and had Oliver end up with Laurel or Sara instead of Felicity. They really messed up with Laurel and she should have been Black Canary from day one and his partner.
