I remember looking at them in one shop in town, the rest hadn't taken the risk, the same way I'd look at laserdiscs, at crazy prices when they first came out. I think it was probably the turn of the century by the time I got a lovely chipped Sony dvd player for £400 and The Matrix was my first purchase. Loved getting dvd's from America, 6 months before they were released in the cinema in Europe. How times have changed.
