Proponents of the New Orleans Saints' draft say; 1) They filled a desperate need by moving up to draft a potential sack star with their first pick. 2) They picked a potential good receiver that could turn their receiver corp into one of the strongest in the league. 3) They picked potential depth at defensive backfield and offensive line. 4) And they picked a potential answer to Sean Payton's never-ending desire to replace Darrin Sproles. 5) And they seemed to have picked good athletes who at the very least maybe able to help with special teams. Of course, that is all "potential". Nothing means anything until they hit the field. But as far as the draft goes, that is all they can do until camp starts. Critics say the Saints still have not addressed a need for a tight end. But they did resign Ben Watson. And they may go after Antonio Gates from San Diego. Who the Chargers have indicated they will not resign. Sproles just re-upped with the Eagles too after being injured last year. Never got the Saints moving on from him. He's a Swiss Army Knife. That being said - and I think the Birds get this now since they have Ajayi and Clement (please no more Smallwood and Pumphrey despite being hurt is undersized and doesn't look like he'll materialize into anything) - please just keep Sproles as a situational back and use him to return punts/kickoffs. can use him as a decoy too in the backfield but i'm hoping he's just good for the occasional screen pass coming out of the backfield now. still want a 'bruiser' though since Blount moved onto the Lions.... Many people did --- and still question not resigning Sproles. The proponents say he was getting old and his production was slipping. And because of the NFLPA, he was getting real expensive. The Saints have had good running backs since Sproles left. But no true situational scatback. Kamara and Ingram do everything. But the Saints had nobody but Ingram until Kamara came along last year. If this new guy works out, he will be a lot cheaper than Sproles.
