I was pretty surprised to see Kirk Douglas not play out the tough guy role in this one. But then it was very early time in his career. Barbara Stanwyck as always gave a pretty solid performance. Yes, I know what you mean. It's like Kirk Douglas hadn't become Kirk Douglas in The Strange Loves Of Martha Ivers. He was giving a performance, and a good one it was, but the almost feral intensity, animal magnetism, the air of danger, which were to become his most notable qualities, had yet to emerge.
