I have a ton of them. Game 6, 1986 WS, the last week of the 2011 baseball season, 2003 ALCS, four, count em four, Super Bowls. But nothing still rankles like 1978. To see the Red Sox blow a 14 game lead, fall three back, then come back and force the playoff. Then to lose to He Who Must Not Be Named. Shit like that hurts more when you are 15, of course. Fact is, it was Reggie Jackson's HR off Bob Stanley in the 8th that was the difference, not "Mr 40 Home Runs Lifetime" cheap ass dinger. Bob Stanley? Not the same chap who's wild pitch tied up Game 6 in 1986? The WP that put Pumpkinhead Knight in scoring position so an E3would score a run? Can't be. But it is. I remember watching game 6, but I didn't care enough at the time for it to be crushing. 2011 was more embarrassing than crushing, I think. And in retrospect, kind of like 2004 doesn't happen without 2003, I believe 2013 doesn't happen without 2011 and 2012. I'm at peace with it. I can't imagine being a Bills fan, though. That had to be tough. 1986 was a tease. I didn't give the Sox a prayer against the Mets. I was just happy they came back against the Angels and won a pennant. The future was bright. Boggs, Hurst, Clemens, Gedman, Greenwell. But then they are three outs away from the Series. One out! Wow, they are going to beat the Mighty Mets and erase the 1918 curse! Sorry, no. And it was Game 6 and the Sox had Hurst for Game 7. But it seemed defeat was inevitable. The super Bowls were tough, especially the 1st one. I sat in Rich Stadium for the AFC Championship and watched the Bills make the Raiders look like a HS team. Thought for sure they would beat the Giants. I think the players thought that also. Too much. Yet I was never prouder to be a fan than after the game at the rally when all of us fans cheered Scott Norwood. And the last two were kind of fun because it was irritating the world. "Let's piss them off and go for four".
