Lafayette was supposed to die at the end of season 1 of "True Blood" but he became a fan fav for the show and the people behind the show liked him so much they kept him on... he always annoyed me in season 1 so I never understood the love for him.
Dewey was supposed to die in "Scream" originally but once David Arquette was cast the character was re-written to be younger and more likable. Craven was not sure if audiences would like seeing him die so 2 versions of the end were filmed, the version with him dead and the version with him alive. Test audiences didnt test well to Dewey dying so he was kept alive...
Jeff Goldblums character was supposed to die in Jurassic Park originally but after Goldblum was cast they kept him alive and even put him in the sequel.
Riggs (Mel Gibson) was supposed to die in the end of Lethal Weapon 2. The bad guy Arjen Rudd was supposed to shoot him in the back and he dies in Danny Glovers arms. Producers were sure it would be a huge hit like the first and wanted to make more Lethal Weapon movies and make it a franchise so they stepped in and changed the ending and kept Riggs alive. Shane Black was so upset they changed his screenplay he left and refused to work on 3 or 4.
Ellen Ripley was supposed to die in "Alien" with the alien ripping her head off. The producers felt that the ending was too dark for an already bleak film so they had her survive and the alien die
Julianna Margulies was supposed to die in the Pilot episode to ER, but test audiences loved her so much they kept her alive.
Damian Lewis was supposed to die at the end of "Homeland" season one but the producers wanted to see his and Clare Danes characters work together more for one more season so they kept him alive.
Oscar Isaacs character "Poe" was supposed to die in "The Force Awakens". The scene in the first act where he crashes in the desert was supposed to be his death. Oscar Isaac met with JJ Abrams and told him he wasn't okay with it as he dies a lot in films and didnt wanna be killed in a huge franchise right away, so Abrams let the character live. So if someone else were cast the character would be dead. That is probably why Poe is MIA for over an hour in the movie after the crash and then suddenly appears and does nothing for plot sake.
Pinocchio was supposed to die. LOL. He was supposed to be made without a conscience and kill Jimminy Cricket with a hammer and be moving wood with no conscience so he does bad things and doesn't realize they are bad. In the end 2 bandits capture him and hang him. Disney decided to do away with all of that for obvious reasons
