THE WIZARD OF OZ was remade as the first (and only, thank God!) version of the story that was a talkie.
And Dorothy was depicted as a child, not as a grown woman like in the 1925 version.
I do admit that some remakes are a great improvement on the originals, e.g. THE MALTESE FALCON.
What I can't understand is why filmmakers insist on remaking movies that are already classics, such as BEN HUR, KING KONG, or the aforementioned PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK.
Would you be surprised if someone decided to remake STAR WARS?
I wouldn't!
As I said, there seems to be a tragic lack of originality today.
