I'm a big admirer of both but gravitate more to the darker subject matter of The Exorcist. If I were going by subject matter I'd pick the Exorcist, but (a) I don't like the way the Exorcist is structured--after a great prologue, there's way too much drama stuff, and then (especially given my upcoming (b)) the exorcism scene goes on way too long in a way that always seemed to me like, "Geez, we've run out of budget, so let's just pad out the last hour by stretching this one scene that's just four actors in a single room", and (b) the tone of the film (again, aside from the prologue, which I really like) and the performances have always struck me as alternating between annoying and really cheesy, sometimes stilted and stagey, sometimes amateurish in a way that's often unintentionally funny (which doesn't help the fact that the whole second half relies on four people trying to act in a single, very limited setting). I like all of the other films in the Exorcist series much more than I like the first film, and yes, I'm including the bizarre second film by John Boorman (I'm a fan of his weirdness), and I'm including the dual prequels in that.
