Ashik Kerib is a 1988 film by the Soviet- Georgian and Armenian filmmakers Dodo Abashidze and Sergei Parajanov the film was adapted from a story written in the early 19th century by the famous Russian writer Mikhail Lermontov, "the poet of the Caucasus"... It was Parajanov's last completed film which he dedicated to close friend Andrei Tarkovsky, and features a detailed colourful portrayal of Azerbaijani culture. Exploring traditional Azerbaijani, customs, costume, music, dance & art, the engaging tale tells of a wandering minstrel Ashik Kerib. Kerib falls in love with a rich merchant's daughter, but is rejected by her father, he is now forced to roam the world for a thousand and one nights... Ashik Kerib is a wonderful, other worldly film experience, highlighted with an exceptional collection of traditional folk music ... An Ashik is a singer who accompanied his song with a bağlama, a stringed musical instrument which belongs to the family of long-necked lutes
