Didn't they cancel Angel to spite Joss because he just assumed they would get a S6 and the guy in charge got pissy about it? that's what I always heard.
I am not sure why either but I remember reading there were plans to adapt the Season 8 comic book into an animated TV show or movie around a decade ago and there were some sites saying Sarah Michelle Gellar was open to doing it but much like the 'Faith' and 'Spike' spinoff TV shows nothing happened and that was often a problem with a lot of the talked about 'Buffy' spinoffs and we had so many magazines and sites saying there were all these plans lined up for the characters and we waited and waited and nothing come of them. There was, however, a motion comic released of Season 8 that you can see on the link below and I had never heard of a motion comic when I got it and thought it meant it was an animated adaption of the comic book and ended up being kinda disappointed.
Sarah Michelle Gellar has sadly said she won't play Buffy again in live action 'cause she thinks she is too old for the role now and doesn't want to have to get in shape for it and that seems to be the same story with David Boreanaz except David said in a few interviews he was open to appearing in a movie of 'Angel' but that was a while ago now. They might be interested in voicing the characters in an Animated TV show or movie though or a video game like they made for 'Ghostbusters (2009)' with all the cast coming back. I still have the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds' video game and played it again last year and I don't know if you have played that Dazz but I think it is possible to make another one that is a continuation to 'Buffy' or 'Angel.' I was surprised we never got an 'Angel' game 'cause there were at least three 'Buffy' video games I had and one of them was on Gameboy Colour and they had 'Alias', 'Dark Angel', '24', 'Charmed', 'Desperate Housewives' and 'Lost' but they don't make as many video games for movies or TV shows as they used to.
The thing about 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and 'Angel' is both shows still have big fanbases unlike some other really popular shows that were on TV around the same time and whether it is an Animated TV show, Animated movie or a video game I think a lot of people would buy it so they should give it a try but maybe they don't want to do anything without Joss Whedon. As for 'Angel' being cancelled I read it was one specific person (Jordan Levin) who cancelled 'Angel' for for the reasons you mentioned above and he didn't like Joss Whedon. I am not sure what his problem was with Joss but I have heard fans say they didn't get along with each other and there was another incident between them before that. 'Angel's' ratings were going up at the time it was cancelled and it was one of the highest rated shows on the network and went out with a bang and since then I have heard the Warner Bros executives and a number of people that worked at the network believe cancelling 'Angel' was a bad idea.
Some say Joss was too overconfident or cocky asking for a renewal early but I can see where he was coming from with that and he wanted to start writing the next season and make sure they had the next season locked before he did. It would have been interesting to have seen 'After the Fall' as a season of 'Angel' but I think that would have been more expensive than previous seasons.
