The City of Light has been the scene of a number of movies, e.g. NINOTCHKA, GIGI, and, of course, THE LAST TIME I SAW PARIS.
I've never been there, except for a one-hour layover in 1968 (never left Orly Airport). I'm hoping that it is still as beautiful as it was depicted in films, and those great sculptured buildings haven't been demolished and replaced by those ugly glass 'n' brass monoliths that cover almost all of the Upper East Side and Lower West Side of Manhattan. I hope the French government has approved some kind of Landmarks Preservation Society, such as the one that saved the beautiful old buildings on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (where I live).
I'm sure that familiar Parisian attractions will never be destroyed in the name of "progress", but there are still interesting neighborhoods that are not necessarily "tourist attractions".
The same could be said of other European cities, but I'm focusing on Paris right now.
