Popular characters who were supposed to die

Strangest I've seen is Bobby Ewing in Dallas returning from the dead after a whole season. They explained it by saying that Pamela Ewing had dreamt the whole thing.

Yes.... but to be fair they never wanted Duffy to leave the series. He chose to leave to do another show and when it failed and wanted to come back they were more than willing to let him back and had the whole season be a dream
