Black Hand (1950) / Richard Thorpe Watching through Filmstruck This week Filmstruck is featuring Gene Kelly movies, some of which I have never seen (such as this one). This is one of the few totally dramatic roles for Gene Kelly (and a good one for J. Carrol Naish too). In fact, Gene Kelly and J. Carrol Naish are the only "named" actors in this movie that I recognize. It seems to be a crusade by early NYC Italian immigrants to fight back against the brutal power of the Black Hand, an organization that controls them and extorts them in order tto maintain its power within the city. So far, the word, "Mafia" has not been used in the movie, but this looks like it could be the early Mafia in the USA. This is a pretty good movie that tells a compelling story with danger, action, and even a McGuffin--the list of members of the Black Hand that takes us from the USA to Italy and back again. .jpg)
