How has it held up after 45 years?
Well i guess it's likely always going to be one of those movies many praise as it seems a bit ahead of it's time and it's in a genre a lot of people like etc. because it's 45 years later and if it's popularity with people was going to drop off it likely would have happened already as it's nearly a half century old.
but for me personally... while it was top notch for me for many years i no longer like it to any super high degree and i honestly think the 3rd movie is the best of the three given my most recent re-watches of the three movies as all three were a 10/10 (as of Feb 2014 viewing of the trilogy) until a re-watch Oct 2016 and that's when the first two movies dropped back to a 7/10(within my Top 199 movies) where as the 3rd movie only dropped to a 7.5-8/10(which means it within my Top 109 movies). so somewhere between those two dates my interest in it took a solid hit. still, a solid trilogy though.
but i wonder if it's possibly due to my interest in that whole gangster themed stuff is likely not as high as it once was as i noticed a good portion of those types of movies i used to think pretty highly of i no longer do in many cases. but don't get me wrong, the genre is still solid for me if done right it's just not as easy to reach amazing status. in fact, come to think of it... the only gangster themed movie i still give a 10/10 score is Road to Perdition (2002) which is within my Top 10 movies in general. but i noticed that movie does not focus too much on the gangster lifestyle unlike your typical gangster movie. even going back to my 9/10's... Carlito's Way (1993) is the only other gangster movie that's a 9/10 or higher. there is other crime types of movies that i scored a 9 or 10 but more strictly inline with gangster themed movies those two are the only legitimate ones. but like i was saying Road to Perdition does not really focus on that whole gangster element as much as the typical gangster movie does even though it does have the whole crime element going for it etc.
but anyways... the Godfather trilogy still stands out for me (as they are still amongst my favorite movies(i.e. my Top 199 movies)) but it's not amazing like it used to be. as for when i first seen The Godfather movies... i don't know exactly when but i would say the early-to-mid 2000's is likely which would have put me in my early-to-mid 20's (ill be 38 later this year). so basically they stayed 10/10 status for about 10, maybe 15, years for me.
