That was a ballsy move. Pujols was the new Stan Musial. He WAS St. Louis baseball. You can alienate a whole generation of fans by letting the face of the franchise go. The Mariners have never put up the attendance numbers they did in the Junior/A Rod days. But Cardinals management knew that a contract like that, paying $30 million per to a player over 40, hamstrings a team. It will be intertesting to see what way the Nationals go in the offseason. Will they pay a gargantuan contract to Bryce or risk pissing the fans off (and losing out on playoff berths) and let him walk? The Nationals are $185m right now but that includes Bryce's $21m plus in adjusted salary plus Daniel Murphy's $17m and he's a FA at the end of this year too. They could realistically afford Bryce but they'd be hard pressed to do much else after that I'd imagine. Right now, Harper isn't playing at a $400,000,000 level. Big power but a .227 BA? And they have Victor Robles waiting for a job. Strasburg can opt out after this year. If I'm the Nationals, I'm wishing Bryce well at his new job. The one difference is, Harper is 25 and Pujols was 31 when he walked.
